I forged the billet for this special Gilpin using my own unique process for
preparing the billet. 5 layers of steel was carefully stacked and held in place
in a unique way for the forge welding. I used 80CRV2 for the core with one
plate of
copper and one plate of 15N20 on either side. 80CRV2 is quite commonly
considered a super steel and rightfully so.
I carefully forge welded the billet, leaving it to cool slowly overnight
inside the glowing forge until the next day.

One the second day I started forging the Gilpin by careful hand hammering and
forging in the fullers as opposed to grinding them in. This Gilpin was forged
to finish which meant little grinding except to reveal the copper layer and
some shape profiling. The blade is stamped proudly with the USA, Buffalo and
WoodsMan logos near the ricasso/handle

The full tang construction was fitted with exotic Brazilian cherry known as
Jatoba which is extremely tough and resilient. The Jatoba is fixed to the tang
with marine grade West Epoxy. 6 brass pins, one brass lanyard piping and the
signature wire bindings for a reinforced structural integrity

This piece is very sexy and unique.

The handle has been sanded,
shaped, engraved and sealed with epoxy.
